709 area: Newfoundland and Labrador
INTRODUCTION OF LOCAL 10-DIGIT DIALING AND A NEW AREA CODE DEFERRED
Local 10-digit dialing
Starting February 11, 2022, business and residential consumers in the 709 region will have to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the phone number – for all local communications. This dialing method has been successfully implemented in several regions in Canada.
The introduction of 10-digit dialing is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and will pave the way for the addition of a new area code, 879, starting on May 20, 2022, as the 709 area code reaches capacity.
For your local calls, you will always enter 10 digits (area code + local number)
- from 709 to 709
- from 709 to 879
- from 879 to 879
The 9-1-1 emergency number remains a three-digit number.
Do you have a number in the 709 area?
Anyone who already has a number with area code 709 will keep the same number.
